Location of the conflict

The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict,(I) was an armedconflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May andJuly 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir. The cause of the war wasthe infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants intopositions on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC), which servesas the de facto border between the two states. During and directlyafter the war, Pakistan blamed the fighting entirely on independentKashmiri insurgents, but documents left behind by casualties and laterstatements by Pakistan’s Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff showedinvolvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces, led by General AshrafRashid. A part of Kashmir is under Pakistani control. This part isknown as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in India and as Azad Kashmir(free or independent Kashmir) in Pakistan. Through this Pakistan wasable to deploy Kashmiri fighters to fight alongside its regular forces. The Indian Army, late on supported by the Indian Air Force, attackedthe Pakistani positions and, with international diplomatic support, eventually forced withdrawal of the Pakistani forces across the LOC.

Saurabh  Kalia Of 4 JAT Regiment of the IndianArmy laid down his life at the young age of 22 for the nation whileguarding the frontiers at Kargil. His parents, indeed the Indian Armyand nation itself, lost a dedicated, honest and brave son. He was thefirst officer to detect and inform about Pakistani intrusion. Pakistancaptured him and his patrol party of 5 brave men alive on May 15, 1999from the Indian side of LOC.They were kept in captivity for three weeksand subjected to unprecedented brutal torture; evident from theirbodies handed over by Pakistan Army on June 9, 1999. After 22 days oftorture, the brave soldiers were ultimately shot dead. However, theIndian soldiers did not break while undergoing all this unimaginablebarbarism, which speaks volumes of their patriotism, grit, determination, tenacity and valour - something all of India should beproud of.

Mj Padmapani Archarya Hailingfrom Hastinapur on the city's outskirts, was killed in the Kargiloperations. He was hit by enemy shelling. Padmaphani's fatherJagannatham, a retired Indian Air Force officer, took the news abouthis son's death with pride. He said his second son, Captain PadmaSambhav Acharya, is also fighting in Kargil. "I am prepared tosacrifice my other son also for the sake of our motherland," the proudfather said.
Nation's second highest wartime gallentry award MAHA VIR CHAKRA was awarded to Major Padmaphani Acharya,

Capt Amol Kalia :

The recapture of a key position in the Batalik sector, by Capt AmolKalia and 13 of his men, all of whom died, was one of the bravest actsseen in the Kargil sector in the ongoing operations against Pakistanisoldiers and Mujahideen.

Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey:

He was commissioned in the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army. Heforced back the intruders on June 11, 1999 at Batalik Sector in theKargil war. He led his men to capture the Jubar top which wasconsidered as important due to its strategic location. Quickly sizingup the situation, the young officer led his platoon along a narrow, treacherous ridge that led to the enemy position.Displaying greatcourage, he surged ahead of his troops and charged at the enemy with afull throated battle cry through a hail of bullets.Although wounded inthe shoulder and leg, he pressed on his solitary charge with grimdetermination, until he closed in on the first bunker. Unmindful of hisgrievous wounds, he rushed from bunker to bunker urging his men on.Critically bleeding, he collapsed at the final bunker and finallysuccumbed to his injuries. But by this time he had already captured thebunker with his men.His last words were, "Na Chodnu" (Don't SpareThem).Manoj Kumar Pandey was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India'shighest medal for gallantry, posthumously. His father, Mr. GopichandPandey, received the award from the President of India on the 52ndanniversary of Indian independence.
